La noche del domingo 22 de febrero de 2015, Alejandro González Iñárritu se convirtió en el segundo mexicano en lograr la estatuilla a Mejor director por su trabajo en Birdman.
Así mismo, logró el Oscar a Mejor película, venciendo a una gran favorita que era Boyhood de Richard Linklater.
Birdman fue un cambio en el género que venía manejando Iñárritu y la 4a vez en que estaba nominado, anteriormente lo había hecho con Amores Perros y Biutiful como Mejor película mexicana y Babel como Mejor director.
En su discurso de agradecimiento, González Iñárritu le agradeció a sus colegas, El Chivo Lubezki, Antonio Serrano así como a todos sus colegas en México.
Mientras que en su discurso por la Mejor película, El Negro Iñárritu señaló que este premio se lo dedica a todos los mexicanos que están en el país construyendo una nación mejor y a los inmigrantes que van a Estados Unidos.
La próxima película del director mexicano será The Revenantcon Leonardo DiCaprio y fotografiada por el mismo Emmanuel Lubezki.
