Estados Unidos anunció hoy que piratas informáticos accedieron a datos de cuatro millones de empleados y excolaboradores del gobierno federal, en uno de los mayores ciberataques contra sus autoridades, que según el periódico The Washington Post podría haber sido perpetrado por hackers chinos.
«Como resultado del incidente», descubierto en abril, la Oficina de Administración del Personal del gobierno (OPM, en inglés) dijo que «enviará notificaciones a aproximadamente cuatro millones de personas».
El ataque informático habría sido iniciado en diciembre por piratas chinos, según el periódico The Washington Post, que cita a autoridades estadounidenses que declararon bajo condición de anonimato. En ese caso se trataría del segundo ciberataque a esta agencia perpetrado por China.
No obstante, la embajada de Pekín en Washington dijo que tales ataques no serían permitidos por la legislación china. «No es responsable sino contraproducente sacar conclusiones y hacer acusaciones hipotéticas», dijo el portavoz de la legación Zhu Haiquan.
«Las leyes chinas prohíben los ciberdelitos en todas sus formas. China ha hecho grandes esfuerzos para combatir los ciberataques de acuerdo con las leyes y regulaciones chinas», agregó.
La OPM maneja cientos de miles de investigaciones de antecedentes de potenciales funcionarios del gobierno cada año. En este caso, no queda claro si el ciberataque afectó a datos de altos funcionarios de la administración.
La OPM recurrió a nuevas herramientas informáticas los últimos meses, las cuales le permitieron detectar el ataque cuatro meses después.
