Durante el inicio de la guerra fría Estados Unidos entrenó como espías a pescadores, montañistas y ciudadanos de Alaska por temor a una invasión soviética que pudiese ocupar el norteño estado.
Para la inteligencia de EE.UU., la invasión de Alaska parecía una posibilidad real en 1950. «Los militares creen que podría haber una invasión aérea incluyendo un bombardeo y el lanzamiento de paracaidistas», dice un memorando del FBI revelado por AP.
La idea de crear tal contingente fue del director de la oficina Edgar Hoover. Era un proyecto ultrasecreto a cargo de la recién creada Oficina de Investigaciones Especiales de la Fuerza Aérea dirigida por su protegido Joseph Carroll, un exagente del FBI.
El plan era tener ciudadanos-espía dotados con equipo de supervivencia con alimentos, ropa de abrigo, material para decodificar mensajes y radios en lugares estratégicos de Alaska que en la clandestinidad pasarían información sobre los movimientos del enemigo.
Los cientos de documentos, que hasta hace poco tiempo se mantuvieron en secreto, fueron proporcionados a The Associated Press por Government Attic, un portal web especializado en publicar informes del Gobierno obtenidos a través de la Ley de Libertad de Información.
Washington no quería espías indígenas. Los creadores del programa, que funcionó entre 1951 y 1959, creían que los «esquimales, grupos indios y aleutianos deben evitarse en vista de su propensión a beber en exceso y su indiferencia a los gobiernos constituidos y a su política y filosofía». Señalaban que «su principal preocupación es su supervivencia y su lealtad podría desplazarse fácilmente a quien tuviera el poder».
