El exsenador republicano por el estado de Pensilvania Rick Santorum anunció este miércoles formalmente su intención de competir por la candidatura republicana para la Casa Blanca en 2016, en lo que supone su segundo intento presidencial.
Santorum confirmó su decisión en una entrevista con el presentador de televisión de la cadena ABC George Stephanopoulos y tiene previsto ofrecer un discurso esta tarde en su ciudad natal de Cabot, en Pensilvania.
En 2012, el exsenador se impuso en las primarias de Iowa y quedó en segundo lugar ante el candidato republicano elegido, el exgobernador de Massachusetts Mitt Romney.
Santorum se une así a una abultada lista de contendientes por la candidatura conservadora, en la que ya figuran oficialmente los senadores Rand Paul, por Kentucky; Marco Rubio, por Florida; y Ted Cruz, por Texas.
Asimismo, también han confirmado sus aspiraciones el exgobernador de Arkansas Mick Huckabee; el neurocirujano Ben Carson; y la ex consejera delegada de Hewlett-Packard, Carly Fiorina.
Actualmente Santorum, cuyo respaldo se concentra en los conservadores cristianos, se encuentra décimo en la intención de voto, de acuerdo a los datos de RealClearPolitics, que pondera diversos sondeos nacionales.
