México.- Un terremoto con una magnitud de 7.9° en la escala Richter sacudió Nepal, lo que ha causado más de 450 muertos y cuantiosos daños materiales, incluido el derrumbe de la histórica torre Dharahara de Katmandú.
El ministerio del Interior de Nepal había confirmado en un balance preeliminar unos 114 muertospor el sismo, que se ha sentido también en India y Bangladesh.
«Hemos recibido información de que hay graves pérdidas materiales y humanas en Nepal«, dijo por su parte Krishna Prasad Dhakal, un diplomático de la embajada de Nepal en Nueva Delhi (India). «Probablemente cientos de personas murieron en varios lugares del país, en particular en Katmandú y Pokhara», añadió.
El epicentro del sismo se situó a 77 km al noroeste de Katmandú, con una magnitud de 7.9 (inicialmente evaluada en 7.5) y una profundidad de 15 km.
El terremoto, que se produjo hacia el mediodía (hora local), desató el pánico entre la población, que salió a las calles despavorida. El movimiento fue de tal impacto que se sintió en la vecina India, incluso en la capital, Nueva Delhi, y también en Bangladesh.
La policía confirmó que muchos edificios se derrumbaron.
«Nuestra prioridad es el rescate en las zonas céntricas de Katmandú donde hay una mayor concentración de población. Todavía no sabemos el balance de víctimas», dijo a la agencia AFP el portavoz de la policía metropolitana, Dinesh Acharya.
