El actor español de origen gitano, Óscar Jaenada fue el elegido para personificar uno de los iconos del cine mexicano, Mario Moreno “Cantinflas”, en la película dirigida por Sebastián del Amo. Esta selección al parecer causó algunas críticas a lo que respondió: “Los actores carecemos de nacionalidad”.
Además, Jaenada tacho de “incultos” a quienes lo criticaron por interpretar a un mexicano sin serlo. “Entiendo lo ocurrido, específicamente en ciertos sectores incultos cinematográficamente”, agregando que los actores se deben a sus personajes.
Tras ser “Cantinflas”, un personaje con el que quedó plasmada la idiosincrasia, clase social y época de una región, el actor expresó que: “Mi preocupación no estaba en interpretar a un mexicano, sino a un cineasta, actor, guionista… Ahí estaba la presión, en hablar de nuestro medio, de las lágrimas que hay detrás de la sonrisa”.
