El psicólogo John Gottmann y el matemático James Murray crearon una fórmula matemática para las conversaciones entre parejas:
El equipo del Dr. Gottmann estudió varias facetas de la pareja y su relación incluyendo expresiones faciales, ritmos cardíacos, y presión sanguínea. También evaluaron los comentarios de las parejas en términos emocionales: felicidad, humor, afección, e interés.
El estudio concluyó que el factor determinante para si las parejas durarían o no, era el “umbral de negatividad”. Si respondían verbalmente a un comentario o acto negativo de su pareja sin mucha provocación, su umbral de negatividad era bajo y la relación era más exitosa.
Las parejas que tiene un “umbral de negatividad bajo”, o sea que son más propensos a quejarse tienen menos riesgo de divorcio. Los científicos podían predecir si las parejas iban a divorciarse con un 90% de precisión cuando usaron la fórmula del umbral de negatividad.
En su estudio, compararon su resultado con un arañazo. Si arreglas el problema temprano se sanará, pero si esperas puede infectarse. Eso sí, los comentarios se deben tener un tono positivo para inspirar cambios. Si siempre tienes un tono negativo puede dañar la relación.
Las parejas con un umbral de negatividad alto no hablan de sus problemas, y tienden a explotar ya cuando no aguantan más.
