SANÁ, Yemen – Funcionarios de seguridad yemeníes afirman que rebeldes chiítas y sus aliados capturaron el palacio presidencial en Aden, después de encarnizaos enfrentamientos en el centro comercial de esta ciudad costera en el sur del país.
La captura se produjo este jueves, a pesar de las incursiones aéreas realizadas durante una semana sobre Yemen por una coalición encabezada por Arabia Saudita, que trata de detener el avance de los rebeldes conocidos como hutíes.
El palacio de Maasheeq en Adén es un conjunto de villas de la era colonial ubicadas en la cima de una colina rocosa que sobresale hacia el mar Arábigo.
El palacio fue el último lugar que ocupó el president Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi antes de huir el mes pasado a Arabia Saudita, en medio del avance hutí.
Los funcionarios hablaron en condición de anonimato, porque no están autorizados a hacer declaraciones a los medios.
Entretanto, miembros de Al Qaeda en Yemen irrumpieron en una prisión de la ciudad costera de al-Mukalla y liberaron a unos 300 reclusos, incluyendo a decenas de insurgentes, dijeron fuentes de seguridad, añadiendo que los rebeldes chiítas se han abierto camino hacia el centro de Aden desde el oeste.
Insurgentes de Al Qaeda estaban desplegados el jueves en las principales vías de acceso a al-Mukalla en un aparente intento de bloquear cualquier iniciativa para recuperar la ciudad, agregaron los responsables.
La toma de al-Mukalla se produce mientras la campaña de bombardeos aéreos liderada por Arabia Saudita contra los rebeldes hutíes, entró en su segunda semana.
