Una portavoz de la compañía de gas y energía Con Edison dijo que equipos estaban en el lugar pero no que habían determinado si lo que sucedió fue una explosión de gas. Agregó que se había cortado el suministro de gas en el área cercana como precaución.
El edificio de cinco pisos tenía 26 apartamentos y fue construido en 1900, según sitios web inmobiliarios.
