Moresby.- Un fuerte sismo golpeó la tarde de este viernes la isla de Papúa Nueva Guinea en el Pacífico Sur, y provocó una alerta de tsunami, pero fue cancelada minutos más tarde.
El movimiento tuvo una magnitud 7.1 grados en la escala de Richter y ocurrió a las 18:06 horas, tiempo local, a una profundidad de 54 kilometros, a 110 kilómetros de Kokopo en la isla de Nueva Bretaña, según el Servicio Geológico de Estados Unidos.
El Centro de Alerta de Tsunamis del Pacífico emitió una alerta que un tsunami, pero la advertencia fue cancelada unos minutos más tarde, reportó el canal neozelandés de noticias One News.
De acuerdo a la advertencia, que fue cancelada, la entidad alertaba sobre olas peligrosas generadas por el tsunami, que podrían alcanzar las costas de Papúa Nueva Guinea en un área de unos 300 kilómetros del epicentro.
De momento no se tiene constancia de daños materiales ni víctimas.
Papúa Nueva Guinea se encuentra en el Anillo de Fuego, donde las placas tectónicas de Australia y el Pacífico chocan. Un alto número de terremotos se registran en el país.
El Servicio Geológico de los Estados Unidos (USGS) informó ayer jueves que un sismo de 6.7 en la escala de Richter se registró en la localidad de Kokopo, al noreste de Papúa Nueva Guinea.
