Tan sólo cinco días después de ser reelegido para su quinto mandato, Blatter dijo que convocará «lo antes posible» un congreso extraordinario para elegir a su sucesor.
«Aunque los miembros de la FIFA me dieron un nuevo mandato, no parecía que era apoyado por todo el mundo», señaló Blatter, de 79 años.
Aclaró que la semana pasada se había sentido «obligado» a presentarse a la reelección por considerar que eso era lo mejor para la institución.
El presidente de la FIFA dijo que lo seguirá siendo hasta ese congreso extraordinario y le pidió al Comité Ejecutivo que lo organizara para «lo antes posible».
Además dijo que el congreso ordinario previsto para el 13 de mayo en Ciudad de México «crearía un retraso innecesario».
«Es necesario que esto se haga según los estatutos de la FIFA y debemos dar suficiente tiempo para que se presenten los mejores candidatos y hagan campaña».
«Estoy muy vinculado a la FIFA y sus intereses. Esos son los intereses que me importan y por eso es que estoy tomando esta decisión», añadió Blatter.
«Lo que más me importa es la institución de la FIFA y el fútbol en todo el mundo».
En el comunicado leído por Blatter ante los medios, dijo que ha estado reflexionando sobre los 40 años que lleva ligado al a FIFA.
«Quiero a la FIFA más que nada y lo que quiero hacer es sólo lo que es mejor para la FIFA y para el fútbol».
