El torneo suele abrir la temporada con la reunión de las mejores raquetas del circuito, que este año incluyó a Nadal, el serbio Novak Djokovic, el suizo Stanislas Wawrinka y el británico Andy Murray.
También estarán los españoles Nicolás Almagro y Feliciano López, quienes sustituirán en el cuadro a los franceses Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, fuera por una lesión en un hombro, y a Gael Monfils, por una rotura en los isquiotibiales, de manera respectiva.
El Zayed Sports City de Abu Dabi albergará el certamen del 1 al 3 de enero, el cual otorgará 250 mil dólares al campeón y que iniciará con el duelo entre Wawrinka y Almagro, y el vencedor se medirá con Djokovic el jueves en semifinales.
Por su parte, de Murray y Feliciano saldrá el oponente de Nadal, quien jugará su primer partido desde el 24 de octubre, cuando perdió en el torneo de Basilea.
Además del torneo de exhibición en Abu Dabi, el ex número uno del mundo sólo participará en Doha, antes de afrontar el primer Grand Slam del año, el Abierto de Australia, que dará inicio el 19 de enero en Melbourne.
