España-. El jurado del Premio Princesa de Asturias de Cooperación Internacional 2015 fue otorgado a la plataforma Wikipedia por permitir la elaboración y consulta abierta de artículos de todo tipo de interés público y general.
La Fundación Princesa de Asturias consideró que Wikipedia representa una modalidad contemporánea y democrática del espíritu enciclopedista del siglo 18.
«El jurado ha valorado el importante ejemplo de cooperación internacional, democrático, abierto y participativo, en el que colaboran desinteresadamente miles de personas de todas las nacionalidades», indicó la Fundación durante el anuncio.
La enciclopedia digital de acceso libre fue creada en 2001 por el estadounidense Jimmy Wales, con la ayuda del filósofo Larry Sange, y desde 2003 está gestionada por la fundación Wikimedia.
El proyecto inició como respaldo a una enciclopedia impresa con la participación de académicos, eruditos y especialistas que colaboraban sin remuneración alguna, pero con la tecnología «Wiki», edición paralala de artículos y almacenamiento de cambios, la plataforma comenzó a despegar.
Wikipedia tiene actualmente más de 35 millones de artículos en 288 idiomas y cerca 25 millones de usuarios registrados, de los cuales, 73 mil son editores activos.
Wikipedia suma más de 500 millones de visitantes únicos al mes.
El de Cooperación Internacional es el séptimo Premio Princesa de Asturias otorgado hasta el momento, junto con el de Artes, Letras, Ciencias Sociales, Comunicación, Deportes e Investigación Científica.
