El lunes en Centennial, Colorado, inició el juicio contra James Holmes, acusado de los asesinatos en masa en un cine de Aurora, Colorado, ocurridos el 20 de julio de 2012, durante el estreno de la película Batman, The Dark Knight Rises.
En medio de estrictas medidas de seguridad, comenzó el proceso judicial. “El asesino de Colorado” -a fin de evadir la pena de muerte- se declaró inocente por razones de salud mental de los cargos de asesinato, intento de asesinato y posesión ilegal de armas de fuego y explosivos. No obstante, los fiscales dicen que pruebas ha demostrado que está en su sano juicio.
Por orden del juez, Holmes fue sometido a un par de evaluaciones de salud mental, aunque los resultados no han sido divulgados.
Tiempo atrás, la defensa de Holmes, solicitó una condena a cadena perpetua a cambio de que Holmes se declarara culpable; sin embargo, George Brauchler rechazó la petición y proseguir con el juicio a fin de solicitar la pena de muerte.
Se premuse que el juicio durará 4 meses. A la cabeza está el juez Carlos Samour, mientras que el jurado está constituido por 11 mujeres y un hombre.
