WASHINGTON (AP) — El presidente de Estados Unidos, Barack Obama dijo que todas las posibilidades de que Irán logre un arma nuclear quedaron anuladas con el histórico acuerdo entre la República Islámica y las potencias internacionales anunciado el martes en Viena.
Obama habló desde la Casa Blanca tras el anuncio oficial del pacto.
Dirigiéndose a los escépticos con el acuerdo, el presidente dijo: «Este acuerdo no se basa en la confianza. Se basa en verificación».
El acuerdo nuclear con Irán, agregó, asegura que Teherán «no desarrollará un arma nuclear». Inspectores verificarán el cumplimento del pacto por parte de Irán.
El presidente dijo que Irán retirará dos tercios de las centrifugadoras que tiene instaladas y se deshará del 98% de sus reservas de uranio.
A cambio, Irán recibirá alivios a sus sanciones siempre y cuando cumpla con las condiciones del pacto. Obama dijo además que vetará cualquier legislación que busque bloquear este pacto y, en un claro mensaje al Congreso, de mayoría republicana, recordó que la falta de acuerdo «supone mayores posibilidades de más guerra» en Oriente Próximo.
