Washington.- Al menos nueve personas perdieron la vida y una más resultó herida este miércoles en un tiroteo ocurrido en una iglesia metodista utilizada por la comunidad negra de Charleston, Carolina del Sur (Estados Unidos).
Gregory G. Mullen, jefe del Departamento de Policía de Charleston, informó que ocho personas murieron dentro de la iglesia y otro más falleció cuando era trasladada a un hospital, junto con otra persona lesionada.
Según indicó el portavoz de la Policía local, Charles Francis, el autor de los disparos aún no ha sido encontrado, pero responde a la descripción de un joven blanco y delgado de unos 21 años, con vaqueros, jersey gris y botas.
Ante ello, Mullen aseguró estar convencido de que se trata de un «crimen de odio».
El alcalde de Charleston, Joseph Riley, dijo que “esta es una tragedia incalificable y desgarradora en esta iglesia con mucha historia, una persona mala y odiosa cobró la vida de los ciudadanos que habían venido a adorar y rezar juntos”.
Riley dijo que la policía de Charleston recibe cooperación de agentes del sheriff, de la policía estatal y del Buro Federal de Investigaciones (FBI).
